The effects of essential oils for your hair

By 8:08 PM , ,

If you want to grow hair faster, essential oils are the way to go. Essential oils penetrate deeply into the skin on your scalp, nourishing the hair follicle and stimulating its growth, at the same time inhibiting hair loss by preventing the hormone that produces DHT which causes hair loss.  And that’s only the beginning of what oils can do.  They can make your hair shinier and healthier.  They can relieve dandruff, eczema, or psoriasis without being dangerous to your scalp and hair, they can soothe an irritated itchy scalp. Soften your hair.  Disinfect and stimulate the scalp.  All these benefits with no nasty toxins and their side effects are actually good for you.

You can add a few drops to your store bought products to turn ok products into amazing products that are better than expensive brands.  Get to know them and what they do and you’re in control of your hair and skin.

Of course, different oils do different things.  Some overlap but in different ways such as tea tree oil and clary sage, which are both excellent anti bacterial oils,  or lavender and chamomile, which are both soothing and calming.  Some shouldn’t be used while pregnant because it can induce labor such as clary sage or rosemary or can be used to induce labor should you be due.

Like with everything we do, ingredients matter and the more potent and well made your essential oils are the better your results. Poor quality oils like those found in markets and many websites, have been distilled from poor crops, have been handled improperly, or are old and usually impotent, weak or stale and lack the therapeutic benefit of good quality oils.

A good quality essential oil should come from reputable companies such as Quinessence or The Ananda Apothecary. Organic oils are typically superior to non-organic oils.

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled, usually by steam or water, from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. They contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from.  Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.

Essential oils are used by diluting them with a carrier oil like grapeseed oil, sweet almond or jojoba oil.  Never use the essential oils directly on the skin, they should always be diluted to 2% of solution.  But when used properly and in the right combinations they can work wonders in the hair and scalp.

Oils that are good for the hair:

Lavender- soothes and calms the scalp. Possesses regenerative properties. When used with other oils essential oils.  Lavender helps to retract skin cells that have been inflamed from chemicals. Can calm eczema and produces great results with respect to hair growth

Chamomile- Is the most soothing for the scalp of all the other itchy scalp conditions.

Myrrh- Great for those with oily scalps. Good purifier.

Lemon- Good for the treatment of dry scalp, dandruff, lice and under active sebaceous glands. Curly or dry hair can benefit from lemon oil
Peppermint- Stimulates blood flow which stimulates hair growth.

Rosemary- Stimulates hair growth.  Good for dry hair.  Good for dandruff and itchy scalp.

Burdock- Beneficial to scalp and to hair growth.  Helps with scalp and hair renewal.

Of course there are many more oils with lots of different benefits but I would need a book to name them all.

Carrier Oils: Another type of oil for hair is called carrier oils. The oils are called carrier oils because they carry the essential oil into the skin. Carrier oils are also known as base oil or vegetable oil they are usually derived from seeds or nuts. Carrier oils are best used as natural and unadulterated as possible. Cold pressing and maceration are the two main methods of producing carrier oils. Carrier oils are very important in hair care; they are great moisturizers, strengtheners and very nourishing for hair.

Jojoba oil
-  Goes deep into the hair follicle and loosens hardened debris that can cause hair loss. Adds softness, shine and moisture to your hair.  It's a great moisturizing and healing natural oil for all hair types.

Almond oil- Nourishes hair to make the roots stronger.  Smoothes hair follicle. Adds shine and softness.

Olive oil
- Deeply conditions hair, improves strength and elasticity of the hair.  Nourishes the scalp.   Olive oil helps in preventing as well as curing hair loss as it prevents the production of the hormone DHT which causes the hair follicle shaft to decrease.

Castor oil-  Nourishes hair and prevents the scalp from drying by retaining moisture. Castor oil added to hair care products helps to seal moisture, softens, and visibly thickens hair.

If all this sounds too complicated and you would rather have a company you trust make up a shampoo especially for you with essential oils for your particular hair.
